football2todayThe Highlander Varsity Football team opened the 2016 season with a dominating performance on the road last Thursday, defeating Oakbrook Prep 36-7. After lightning delayed the start of the game by 25 minutes, it took little time for the Highlanders to get on the board. Starting quarterback Duffy Beal got things going with his first of two touchdown passes to senior wideout Benton Mason, for the quick 6-0 lead. The Highlander defense proved stout for the entire course of the game, limiting OPS to just 12 total yards of offense in the first half, propelled by Griffin Harden’s 6 tackles, along with a sack and forced fumble.

By the end of the first half, the Highlanders had raced out to a 30-0 lead, as Beal would find Mason twice and Mac Hardy for touchdown passes. Beal finished the half completing 9 of 15 passes for 194 yards and three TD’s, while Mason hauled in 6 receptions for 127 yards and two scores. For his efforts, Mason was named the Cici’s Pizza Athlete of the Week by Midlands High School Sports. Junior running back Brandon McCullough book-ended the second and third quarters with touchdown runs of over 30 yards.
Defensively, 21 players collected tackles, while sophomore Reagan Olsen (interception) & sophomore Trevor Squirewell (fumble recovery) contributed 5 tackles each, along with a turnover.

This Friday, the team will play their first home game of 2016 as they welcome in the Ben Lippen Falcons (1-0) to Highlander Stadium for a 7:30 kickoff. The Falcons won a rain-shortened game on Friday against Northwood Academy, 13-0, behind two scores from Virginia Tech-commit Bryce Thompson.
